For Lawyers
I have practiced law long enough to have experienced the gamut, although certainly not all, of the challenges that a life in the legal profession can muster. Over the last twenty-five years, I've changed practices, partners and states. I've been a lawyer practicing in business, family, criminal, personal injury, employment and real estate law. I've tried lawsuits in federal and state courts and with my partner, Steve Tinkler, have twice secured jury verdicts in the $2,000,000 range. We've also represented hundreds of people who have been sexually, physically or emotionally abused as children or as adults. I've undergone dream, gestalt and psychotherapy. I've raised four kids. Despite the benefit of my personal experience, I am still challenged daily by habitual thoughts of lack and insecurity. I just have learned how to respond to them differently. When we become dissatisfied as a lawyer and our lot in legal life, we begin to feel like we're swimming against a current which only gains strength.

We begin to lose energy and interest and do not know how to change our course. We choose anger, happiness or depression more often than not. We may even choose alcohol or drugs. Perhaps worst of all, we resign ourselves to a professional life devoid of passion and fulfillment. There are solutions to what is depleting you. Some of them are simple, but almost all of them require a fundamental shift in attitude, in the mechanics of thinking, in the understanding of how a life is created from moment to moment. Changing a life necessitates a willingness to discard some very crusty habits and commit to moment-to-moment attention and out-of-the-ordinary action. I feel that I have meaningful information that can yield positive results in your life as a lawyer if you choose to act upon it.
